The First Tee of Greater Detroit makes golf accessible to all youth in metro Detroit, with a focus on underrepresented girls and boys in Detroit. We believe that golf is more than a game; golfers have a unique code of conduct not found in other competitive games or sports. Through learning the game of golf, young people develop the character traits that will transfer success on the golf course to success in life.
Purpose: The First Tee of Greater Detroit helps reshape the worldview of underrepresented young people in Detroit and surrounding areas by teaching STEM, life skills and character education though the game of golf. We partner with schools, parents and the community to provide evidence-based curricula for participants to achieve successful outcomes for their future.
Focus: To provide underrepresented youth resources through partnerships with community organizations, City of Detroit golf courses, golf organizations, donors and sponsors an experience that encourages:
Recreation – through the life-long sport of golf
Education – through academic and life skills education
Aspiration – using life skills, character education and golf skills to prepare youth for the future.
